Graphics, Vision, Materials, and Optimization

Abstract:

In this talk, I will describe my work that started in photorealistic material appearance capture for realistic graphics applications, and has, since my thesis, expanded into broader problems combining graphics, vision, optimization, and machine learning. Additionally, I will briefly describe fresh results from two recent works: our upcoming paper on capturing material appearance using
convolutional neural networks (accepted to SIGGRAPH 2018), and a CNN-based image processing method that sets a dramatic new state of the art in image restoration from bursts of badly corrupted pictures.

Bio:

Dr. Miika Aittala is currently a Postdoctoral Associate with Professor Frédo Durand at MIT CSAIL. Prior to this, he completed his PhD thesis with Professors Jaakko Lehtinen and Lauri Savioja at Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland.

Dr. Aittala's thesis, defended in October 2016, has received numerous awards: four Finnish awards from Aalto University, The Finnish Society for Computer Science, Academic Engineers and Architects (TEK) and Tekniska Föreningen i Finland (TFiF). On April 16 2018 he
received the Eurographics society's prestigious doctoral thesis award in the annual EUROGRAPHICS conference in Delft.
