Title: HTTP-based streaming techniques and their optimization

SCI hosting department: Computer Science

Abstract:
Recent years have witnessed an amazing growth of multimedia delivery services over the Web.  Several challenges need to be addressed to provide successful services in such a context, in particular for the case of transmission using the HTTP protocol, which has been historically optimized for Internet browsing and download but not for multimedia.  The talk gives an overview of the problem of on-demand streaming, starting from a historical perspective, then introducing the approach of chunked HTTP streaming, which has been standardized in the so-called dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH).  Then, the critical issues in optimizing HTTP-based streaming systems are briefly discussed, considering both the server and the client side, highlighting problems and some of the approaches recently proposed in the literature to solve them.
